Re: Astronomy C
Hi everyone, I know this competition year didn't turn out as anticipated, and I'm sorry for the lost season, especially for those of you who are seniors. I also hope your families, friends, and teachers are staying safe. As a reward for those who studied hard on Astronomy this year, we (the national...

Re: Astronomy C
Separate question: When you are given a radial velocity graph that only has phase across the bottom, how do you determine the period? The phase is a portion of the period, right? But how would you determine what the actual period is in units of time? There would have to be other information given. ...

That's an error, there are indeed only 4 planets (discovered to date) in the system.sciolymom wrote:Regarding HR 8799, the webinar slides say this system has 5 planets, but I'm only seeing info that says 4 planets. Is 4 correct, or am I missing a planet somewhere?

The sample exam for this year is now posted: http://www.aavso.org/science-olympiad-2015.
It should give you a hint on the new topics! I would use it as an introduction to the types of questions that might be asked, as I'm sure scioly.org's test exchange will have plenty of good practice tests.

Re: Astronomy C
@meltingface: they're the same book, but the text on "Modern Stellar Astrophysics" takes only the chapters from the "Introduction to Modern Astrophysics" related to stellar structure and evolution. If you're planning on studying astronomy in undergrad, I'd get the full text.
