Re: 2017 National Tournament: Wright State University

Insider info: I coached Dcrxcode and Pikachu4919 last year, but moved this year. Sorry Dcrxcode, no. I told you to move to Munster to be on my team again this year; you had your chance. Sorry Pikachu4919, but I'm not doing that. It is warming to hear how much you valued your experience at nationals,...

Re: 2017 National Tournament: Wright State University

I'm quite certain the disappointment will be widespread, both on the grounds that these events are likely to appeal to a very narrow niche of SO students and that there are so few opportunities. State tournaments generally have more trial events. Indiana usually runs four (per division). The recent ...

Re: 2011-2012 Events

Ecology is definitely biology, but big parts of bio are definitely ignored. Designer genes is one of the best events in the Olympiad by far. Protein modeling is only superficially related to genetics - in fact the exams provided by MSOE for regional, state, and national tournaments have never requir...

Re: Indiana 2011

Looking back with regrets is not a good feeling, starapollo is wise beyond his years - remember that everyone has their issues. We (Bloomington South) won mousetrap vehicle at the WSI invite (including Centerville) with a fantastic score then got 7th at state due to mediocre runs, our mission/tower/...

Re: Indiana 2011

Re: Indiana 2011

Astraeospongia are basket sponges. When I searched for "star sponge" I did find a few references to Astraeospongia as such, also. Really, even in biology research groups/college classes, the COMMON name for sponges is usually just "sponge." If people are bothering to differentiate sponge species I ...

Re: Indiana 2011

@heejungkim12: I believe there is a strong consensus that Disease Detectives was the worst run event at state. We had the returning national champion in disease detectives on our team and she was thrilled with 3rd because the test was "stupid and there was NO epidemiology." @Starapollo1: Microbe our...

Re: Indiana 2011

There are WUT!? Only THREE seniors? Do you realize how FEW that is for a state championship team? Ouch Ouch Ouch... :? You're going to be deadly next year, too. I see you were in Microbe. What was the issue with Microbe? I've heard tons of complaints but my students were never very specific....

Re: Indiana 2011

I'd also like to congratulate Northridge and point out that (as a coach from Bloomington South) Northridge is clearly having a PINNACLE year (or perhaps the first year of a many-year-pinnacle) as evidenced by impressive scores at prior competitions and a really aggressive invitational schedule. When...

Re: Indiana 2011

I know that nobody cheers for Goliath, but it's really not cool to suggest that IU Bloomington is somehow NOT neutral ground. I would point out that only about half of the state tournaments have been held in Bloomington since the Bloomington High Schools have been taking state championships. The las...
