Re: Wright Stuff C

It would unfair to all of those who helped us this year to fade away without an update on our experience at regionals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cKY4swSvU8 This flight placed Luke 3rd. Even if he'd gotten 1st, the extra 2 points would not have been enough to get the team to State (they needed...

Re: Wright Stuff C

There are a couple of the General Rules and references in the Build Policy that somewhat clarify this. Yeah, I'm quoting the Building and Tools Policy on soinc.org: "The process of design and resultant product is the students’ responsibility." Same contradiction. Use the kits, they are allowed. Jus...

Re: Wright Stuff C

It's all one sentence, so if line one is stating "design" as only a prerogative (it isn't), then it follows that "construction" and "testing" are also only a prerogative (they aren't). That's why the wording is a problem. You're all engineering type people, surely you see the logic.

Re: Wright Stuff C

Line one: "Prior to the event teams design , construct, and test free flight rubber-powered monoplanes or biplanes to achieve maximum time aloft". I have nothing against kits either, and they are explicitly permitted, but the contradiction is glaring, and everyone takes full advantage of that, which...

Re: Wright Stuff C

I too like videos also for analysis, memories, and also for showing off, so I hope it's not outlawed because of abuse. Frankly, I don't see how any real advantage could be gained anyways: if you're bad at building stuff, no video will fix that. Anything to be gained from an illicit video is readily ...

Re: Wright Stuff C

No recording equipment of any kind: cameras, phones, courtroom artists, etc... There is ample precedent for such a rule. At this point I can't tell if SciOly is naive or just careless :?: Obviously the honor system isn't being respected to everyone's satisfaction (including what I'm doing), so SciOl...

Re: Wright Stuff C

That's easy: no recording equipment allowed in the room. I never thought of it, but now that you mention it, I'm amazed that's not already being enforced. My main concern would be competitors getting advice via text. I don't go to Luke's meets and I can't text, so that avoids me any temptation to mi...

Re: Wright Stuff C

The solution is simple: we've posted absolutely everything, so the "evidence" of our "crimes" is overwhelming. Those with residual concerns should band together and get an official ruling. SciOly can disqualify us if appropriate, and we will accept the decision :x . If SciOly does not disqualify us,...

Re: Wright Stuff C

Adult-built planes is a concern. I've seen some beauties that have me wondering, but proving malfeasance would be impossible. After I too wondered aloud once, I was made to realize that it's best to not go there. As for Luke's planes, I built and extensively tested the prototypes, the torque meter, ...

Re: Wright Stuff C

We should drop this because it is not going to get resolved. The rules explicitly state that students are to design the plane. If you didn't design your plane and you're using a kit, you interpreted the rules to maximum personal advantage. Well, everyone is interpreting the rules to maximum personal...
