Re: Start and finish line positions may not be adjusted?

Hi. New to this event so my question may seem silly. My team is designing a box that will have multi-levels with zig zag paths. They are planning to raise or lower the top level with the start line based on how many levels they will need (depending on the length of time). They will have a fixed sta...

Re: Event Supervising

I get four helpers for 52 teams, although I usually have less than 30 devices because so many teams are scared of Mission. I will have to think through the logistics of 15 minute blocks, but one thing that occurs to me right away is that the this schedule will kill two time slots for half of the stu...

Re: Event Supervising

We avoid this scheduling problem by putting people into 15 minutes blocks at the Solon HS invitational. The simplest reason to not do impound until State Tournaments is because the rules say not to... One team per block? That could accommodate at most thirty teams if you give supervisors a lunch br...

Re: Event Supervising

Just ran regional yesterday with an impound, and I honestly have no idea how anyone does it without an impound unless the competition is tiny. One of my assistants had run a fairly large invitational without impound, and he said it was a nightmare. If a lot of teams use their thirty minute setup (a...

Re: Event Supervising

Speaking of safety checks, can we talk about lead? I had two devices that used lead weights, and given the wording of 3j I had to consider them to have violated the safety clause in 2c, which means participation only. Does that strike anyone else as unnecessarily harsh?

Re: Magnet Task

Would it be allowed to use an electro magnet so when it stops receiving power the object falls? You need to remove the magnet from a surface so the object falls, so an electromagnet wouldn’t work. It would if you just pulled the electromagnet off instead of turning it off. Of course, using an elect...

Oops, my bad - I miscounted. You are correct, of course, Islip made it.

Re: End Task

It doesn't say "uniform" in the rules. It just says A single surface with a hole in it is still a single surface, IMO. In my interpretation, smooth means that there are no deviations in the texture of the surface across the entire area of the square. A hole doesn’t exactly have the same t...

ELI got six, the sixth being Hauppauge. Islip did not make it.

Re: End Task

I think they said "smooth" so you couldn't cover it in sandpaper to reduce the likelihood of the battery tipping over, but I can see your argument. I suppose we'll have to see what SOINC says if they answer the question I just put. Of course, they haven't answered any of my other questions...

Re: End Task

Is it okay to put a hole through the square platform. I am trying to lift it with a motor that has a screw shaft, and in order for it to lift the platform I may need to put a hole into the middle of the platform. The device I am using can be found here. https://www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors...

Re: New York 2019

I am the coach of a 2nd team and am trying to find out what the policies are for qualifying for States in NY for Division C. From what I understand it depends on the mumber of teams/schools in the region and how many rimes the top qualifiers have advanced over the previous years. There does not see...
