Re: Pictures

I have a number of photos in different slideshows on youtube under the username "BalsaBridgeBuilder". In particular, this video of mine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_MNP65dNH4 has several pictures of National medaling structures from the last time boomilever was an event. I won't identify which o...

Re: Boomilever B/C

If your base is laminated, you could also experiment with grain direction by making one piece horizontal and the other vertical. If one piece is thicker than another, I would suggest making the thicker piece have the horizontal orientation. I think Balsa Man's suggestion should work the best in theo...

Re: Boomilever B/C

http://scioly.org/w/images/f/f5/AiaDistalEndSideView1.png I still don't get it, if the tension member was glued on top of the compression member like a lap joint, how would you connect the bracings between the two? The tension and the compression member wouldn't be in the same plane... Could someon...

Re: Boomilever for 2013

Ala, Did you use any particular height on the bass triangles that you CA glued to the tension member at the base. Was this your idea or was it borrowed? I have been looking for a method to "pin" the member to the base. This certainly does that. I believe those triangles were cut from 3/32" square b...

Re: Boomilever for 2013

(If there is a 1/4 inch cross section rule) For boom all members need to meet the 1/4 inch cross section requirement. I understand the base is excluded from the 1/4 inch cross section limit, but what about gussets? Aia's booms have a distal end connection that looks larger than just 1/4 inch, and I...

Re: GLUE!

When I built towers in 2007, I recorded the weight of every piece of wood I used as I went along. After finishing the tower, I weighed the resulting structure and compared that value to the sum of the weights of all the pieces. In a 5g tower, I generally found that ~.1g of the tower's mass was glue....

Re: Boomilever for 2013

Awesome guide... Tons of stuff I haven't thought of yet, it will definitely be helpful to all of us, thanks! And here's a random question... I guess we never had to think about it with towers(that's the only load-bearing event I've done), but how would one get the loading block in a position like t...
