You are supposed to use Cobalt Blue glass to filter out any sodium ions in the powder...sodium burns yellow, so by placing the glass in front of the flame you can get a clearer, easier read on the flame's color.

Presently, I am a staff writer for the school paper, and I edit the school's literary magazine. I tutor on Mondays. I'm part of the CSI club, the Latin Club, and the Communications Club. I'm a Big Sister (basically, a student mentor;) I'm in the Library Service, the Book Club and the school's Chorus...

with the glass: it was a definite orange
without it: yellowish orange

from a candle's flame? the last time i did it (with a candle) i was unable to see total orange; i used a piece of cobalt blue glass (for the first and last time) to make sure.

I have always gotten one, save my first year on the event (2 years ago.) The rules only say that the supervisor will provide a flame source either candle or burner, so I would venture to guess that you will for sure get a flame source; whether burner or candle will be up to the supervisor.
