Re: Sign Task
We're flying over. Too far to drive (it would take over a day non-stop to get there...). TSA hasn't been very friendly to our stuff in the past... and some of my stuff is so big that UPS won't ship it. But I think I have a solution now.

Re: Pennsylvania 2011
Hey Alaric - Congrats! Penn should be awesome. Definitely look into helping out with PA Olympiad - It's a fun organization! I worked with VA SO this year (Supervised Towers at both Regionals and TPS at States) and I found it really rewarding. In addition to the competitions mentioned by L42, Bayard...

Hahaha. Well, I didn't do it; I'm not from Solon. But evidently they figured out a way to do so - props to them!
In the meantime, nationals is coming up and I still haven't figured out how I'm going to ship my stuff... sigh

Re: South California
Incidentally, I just wanted to comment that the person who thought of the Monty Python bonus question for Sounds of Music is, in my opinion, utterly brilliant.

Re: Pennsylvania 2011
Hey everyone. This may not be the best time for a post like this, but I am heading over to the Univ of Pennsylvania for college next year and I was wondering if there were opportunities to volunteer for Pennsylvania Science Olympiad there.

Re: Sign Task
Yup after seeing what Solon can do round balloons simply won't cut it. Also a side not the momentum idea does not work very well. Perhaps i works for lifting the mass an extra 5 inches but not 50 cm. We have done tests with the momentum idea, and it seems that there's an optimal length of string th...

Re: Sign Task
My guess is they have an insanely large balloon; one that takes up half or more of the device, maybe custom made. Then, if the competition is in a gym or some place with a really high ceiling, they use the momentum of the balloon itself to pull up the weight. To do this, you just need a really long...
