also, how do you determine the exact elevation of say, a house on the top of a hilltop on a topographic map? Do we just add up the contour lines? Or is there a way to be more specific? :?

Backyard Bird Song book!!! It's good for vocalization! :D
it's uber expensive at borders, like, $30; but i bought mine at costco for really cheap! Like, $15!!!! HALF THE PRICE!!!!!! :D :D :D

the kaufman guide is good for identification because its got real live pics of the birds next to their descriptions and range
(its got a scarlet tanager on the front)
