Re: Testing Apparatus

You are going to have a heck of a time finding a reasonably priced scale that can measure 15+KG to within a gram. The one we have used for years in our region can read to 5 grams, and we have never even come close to having a tie. This year with the loading mass being squared it does make the measur...

Re: Balsa or Bass

It is actually not particularly difficult to work with very thin balsa. You can cut it with a razor, scissor or paper cutter, just like paper. What we have found however is that very thin and low density balsa (at least the pieces we got) tend to be extremely inconsistent in density and thickness. I...

Re: Storm the Castle B

The ratio between short and long arm length, wheel position, and sling length are what makes this event a challenge. It's hard to say what will work best for your individual design. You may want to try to read over any previous (archived) posts. They have some good information. There is no single r...

Re: Balsa or Bass

Does anyone know of a good website to purchase known density balsa wood. I found http://www.specializedbalsa.com/ but they are very pricey. Essentially the only thing you get when you pay more for balsa is known density. You are paying for the work involved in weighing and marking the density. Pers...

Re: Glue

Way back when our team used mostly CA but also some Ambroid/Sigment to build the most efficient bridge at Nationals. CA is strong and fast but it has no solvent so it can be heavy (it does not lose weight while curing). If you can use a solvent type glue (Sigment/Ambroid, etc.) then do so, but it is...

Re: Sumo Bots C

I can't explain why our bot uses a lot of energy. We have what we believe to be a unique feature, that uses a bunch of power (no it is not a 100 watt diode laser, although that would be way cool, and dangerous, and wouldn't even use a tremendous amount of power). OK, OK we have a high power infraso...

Re: Sumo Bots C

Impounding tools was not required for Electric Vehicle the last time it ran, either. Old, you haven't told us what batteries you are using yet. If you are using a decent battery pack and are sucking it dry then you are right, but frankly those of us with experience in this event (i.e., New Yorkers)...

Re: Designs

The 8.0 cm hole is not part of the tower, it is a hole in a testing jig, or an imaginary circle, through which the top portion of the tower must be capable of passing. At the national tournament the tower will not be allowed to touch the circle in the jig, so don't build a force-fit. As always, it ...

Re: Balsa or Bass

We never had very good results with the balsa stripper except on very thin wood. I have heard that it can work but it must take steadier hands than either I or my partners had. As to the comment about the cost of doing all this selecting. It is true that the saw was expensive but the wood cost very ...

Re: Efficiencies

Slow down everyone! The load supported is in kg, not grams. So, divide your scores (not efficiencies) by a cool million. By the way, has anyone noticed that the C division dimensions are identical to the 2005-6 season and that the B divisions dimensions are identical to the 2007-8 season? Yes, I've...
