Re: Water Quality B/C

So, I was looking over last years national test and there were two questions related to algal blooms. I know that both nitrates and phosphates contribute to algal blooms, so I remember last year being confused on which answer choice to choose (Too much ______________ can cause excess algae using up...

Re: Write It Do It B/C

I've done both parts of widi, and for me, being a doer was more stressful. I would never recommend widi to someone who doesn't think they could handle pressure well.

No, it decreases. The velocity is highest and the channel narrowest at the headwaters.

Re: Forestry ID

I think sassafras oil is actually cancerous, they used to use it in root beer before it was banned by the FDA. :P

Re: Forestry B/C

I wouldn't worry about your notesheet. For nationals you just need to get ID down, preferably without use of your field guide, then learn tree facts and trivia. Some general knowledge wouldn't hurt either, last year they asked us the dimensions of a board foot.

waywardwind12 wrote:Thanks for answering! Also, are there tons of ambiguous questions like "What month does this plant bloom" (when different guides can say April, March-May, May, March, etc.)?
For nationals, not really... The most ambiguous question was probably "What kind of habitat would you find this tree in?"

Re: Forestry B/C

Sorry I'm new to this forum and am not sure if this type of question is allowed but do any of you guys know how the Nationals test for Division C is formatted? Is it via real specimens, pictures, or a combo of both? Thanks! It might not be the same this year, but last year if I remember correctly w...

Re: Water Quality B/C

Basic ecology is necessary as a foundation for aquatic ecology, which you should be focusing on. Estuaries were just added this year and I've also found that they don't come up on tests often. If anything they'd be part of an ecology question, rather than water quality.

Re: Water Quality B/C

As far as I know, there's no simple relationship between temperature and pH. Much more important is daily variation in pH, which silentsage explained (CO2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, so photosynthesis, a process which removes carbon dioxide and only occurs during the day, would decreas...

Re: Forestry B/C

I don't believe the NatGeo has info besides ID, and even with that it's fairly limited. It's a tiny book.

I have it borrowed from my school's library if you have any questions. :)
