Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2019

As far as Troy is concerned, that is my point. They seem to do the same old. I expect them to be about equally powerful, similarly hungry and equally well-prepared. I don't think they will regress. But they should not be improved much either, while many other teams seemingly did. "Several teams are...

Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2019

People like to dismiss recent success as possible fluke in the face of history/tradition. ... This may sound silly, but I think Troy was not very active in invitationals and it may make them more likely to fail in some events. I would not be shocked if they don't get in top 3 this time. Edit: I nee...

Re: Balancing Difficulty and Accessibility in Test Writing

In terms of difficulty, my personal philosophy is simple: Have a broad range of questions, the easiest one being "everyone will get this" and the hardest one being "nobody will get this", with an even distribution in between. In theory, this results in a mean score of 50%, which is pretty close to i...

For Division C it could (should) be. Division B, probably not.

Re: Tryouts/Freshman

For build events, the best way to have tryouts would be to have kids bring in a device in order to try out. That way, you know they're serious, and it gives your team a starting point. Depending on how hardcore your school is, this might not be super feasible. Works very well if it does work. That ...

Re: Spreadsheet For Test Summation

Thanks for the comments! Personally I wouldn't do this in most cases, since I find mental summation more accurate. I've thought about this, but as for question analysis, usually you can see that pretty easily while grading. Sharing with teams is a possibility, but I doubt enough people consider that...

Spreadsheet For Test Summation

A question for event supervisors: Is it possible to input test answers into a spreadsheet in order to expedite scoring? Basically, it would be a spreadsheet where each team has a column. Each row is a question, and in each box is the score that the team got on that question. For many questions, like...
