Re: Thermodynamics B/C

Hey guys...so I have been taking practice tests and have been thinking...how much of the test is actually going to be on what the rules say.(I know that in theory it is everything but in reality I doubt it will be that much). That is why I have been taking notes on everything thermo I can find sinc...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

For those using aerogel: are you worried at all about long-term viability? Since it is a powerful dessicant, I feel that it shouldn't be exposed to the humid air in the device. What do you all think? I feel as though very few are using aerogels. A friend of mine did a research paper on the matter, ...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

the skirt was the key to doing well in this event, not having the biggest baddest fan. That's kind of the whole point of a hovercraft versus a helicopter, right? I mean, getting good contained airflow efficiently seems to be a bigger factor than just having the most powerful fan. Is it more difficu...

Re: Underappreciation

At my school, there is a huge lack of respect for people who prefer academics over athletics. Everyday during assembly, the student coaches will usually stand and announce how their teams are doing. Something like: "Her guys! Blake here. Yesterday during the lacrosse game we....". There's ...

Re: Hardest Science Olympiad Event, in your opinion?

Oh, and our vehicle sucked a lot of money out of our Science Olympiad fund. It was in the $500 range, having built 3 vehicles and spent numerous endless weekends on finding the best skirt.

Re: Hardest Science Olympiad Event, in your opinion?

My team usually requires you to do 3-4+ events (and do well in them) in order to have a good chance of being accepted on the team. This year, the building portion of Hovercraft was such a disaster that I was basically excused from Ecology and Crime, in order to improve Hover. It took 150+ hours, my ...

I didn't have the BTU conversion and didn't have the date when the word "Hovercraft" was patented. Other than that, we left one part of the tension problem blank.

Re: Pennsylvania 2017

It looks like PASO is taking initiative in organizing more B division invitationals http://www.pascioly.org/index.php?p=announcements&s=b#052217 Looks like there will(hopefully) be a lot more tournaments for B division for all of the teams not next to Ohio, plus probably some teams from surroun...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

it depends more on how you use your 8 minutes efficiently at the competition, rather than taking a whole ton of data before it. I would tend to disagree. Acquiring an excessive amount of data before competition provides all the information with which you may maximize your eight minutes. Should you ...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

My partner and I joked briefly about jet powered hover, where tanks of Nitrous Oxide replace batteries. I mean, as long as lift is powered by a fan blade and motor, I don't think jet engines are discounted by the rules. (Of course I'm joking!) More seriously, something like bottle rockets, where the...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

I really am praying for fastest wins, I had a design that got under a second! \ I would wager that they will not ever make the competition fastest wins, because Chalker has said multiple times that fast is a safety issue, which was the whole problem with maglev. I also think that he said slower is ...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

As an aside, it looks like there will be some BIG changes to this event next year. The rules committee discussed them at length and everyone seems to like them. Now I just have to actually write up all the details and test them out to make sure we aren't causing unintended issues. Sorry to be crypt...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

No, our track was entirely unaffected. As stated previously on the forums, I make sure to test on a wide variety of surfaces to ensure I can shoot for an accurate time. Using the data I have on melamine, polished stone, tile, plywood, steel, folding tables, etc, I have multiple formulas to predict ...
