Re: Measuring Devices

Is buying a laser measuring device for testing a good investment. It's not really necessary - you're measuring the distance along the floor. Doing that with a normal tape measure is easy - your floor is obviously free of obstructions, because your car is traveling on it. They're useful enough toys,...

Re: "Each participant may bring one sheet of paper"

Hmm... I think the issue here is two copies of the same cheatsheet makes sense, but I think there was an FAQ that specifically allows the cheatsheets to have different content(it'd be extremely difficult to nearly impossible to enforce anyway), so I think it would make more sense to have x number o...

Re: Tweaks for 2021

What about completely making all parts of the plane by hand, and no kits allowed. This would truly make the teams stand out from one another. For the vast majority of normal teams, the kits at least give them a place to start. You still have to be able to tune the plane (and you see very different ...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

What I'm proposing is that 28 events are scored, and teams can drop the 5 lowest events, resulting in the same number (23) of events counting towards a team score, and allowing teams to pick which events they want scored more. Lots of invitationals have a hard enough time running 23 events (finding...

Re: 2020-2021 Detector

For an added challenge, (eg at nats), you could have two different monochromatic light sources and ask the teams to return two wavelengths. This would kill the filter approach and force people to use diffraction stuff, though. If you know that you have no more than two monochromatic light sources, ...

Re: Ramp Creation

Our teams used a CNC to cut all the ramp parts so that was easy, (not exactly a trade secret) but a foam board with one of those smooth sides on it. I think ours was about 3mm thick, and it doesn't break or warp or cut you or anything like that , which sheet metal might, and you can cut holes in it...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

Although I doubt you have bad intentions, Ohio tournaments are generally cautious about raw scores because it could violate FERPA laws . And for anyone who wants to play amateur lawyer and argue that releasing SO competition raw scores doesn't violate FERPA, you might be right. You might have a dec...

Re: COVID-19

Is it just me... or does anybody else think a lot of these measures aren't helping because they only address the future? Mean incubation time for COVID-19 is a bit more than 5 days. In other words, you don't start to see the effect of whatever measure you implemented until a week afterwards, and it...

Re: 2020-2021 Detector

I find that this "color detector" would actually be a much more interesting topic then what they currently have, but I feel less teams will be able to nail it down, like many with the temperature sensor. A spectrophotometer based on a diffraction or reflection grating is quite buildable. So is a co...

Re: 2020-2021 Detector

Personally, I would like to see a change in the task itself. I feel like its pretty feasible given that all the basic materials (microcontroller and related hardware) can be reused. Only thing that might change is the sensors themselves That would be what would happen if we carried on the normal ro...
