Re: End Task

I think they said "smooth" so you couldn't cover it in sandpaper to reduce the likelihood of the battery tipping over, but I can see your argument. I suppose we'll have to see what SOINC says if they answer the question I just put. Of course, they haven't answered any of my other questions, so I won...

Re: End Task

Is it okay to put a hole through the square platform. I am trying to lift it with a motor that has a screw shaft, and in order for it to lift the platform I may need to put a hole into the middle of the platform. The device I am using can be found here. https://www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors...

Re: New York 2019

I am the coach of a 2nd team and am trying to find out what the policies are for qualifying for States in NY for Division C. From what I understand it depends on the mumber of teams/schools in the region and how many rimes the top qualifiers have advanced over the previous years. There does not see...

Re: Disease Detectives B/C What's new?

I noticed on this year's event description, the section about C level doing advanced statistics is gone, replaced by a requirement they do more on confounding, biases and prevention measures. Does this mean we can stop trying to teach college statistics?!! Probably will be more clear on the new DD ...

Re: Disease Detectives B/C

Why is attack rate listed on part 2, then incidence proportion is listed on part 3, even though attack rate and incidence proportion mean the same thing? They don't mean the same thing. Incidence figures are virtually always calculated for whole populations, and attack rates for exposed populations...

Re: Disease Detectives B/C

To give an event writer's perspective, I used to always use data about diseases form the year's topic for the major portion of the event. I would expect students to have some basic information about the most common or important agents in the category - life cycle, incubation period etc. Generally, I...

Re: Screw Task

Do we think that the screw must be in contact with the object it is moving for the whole time? For example, if the screw was moved horizontally only about one centimeter, but made contact with a ball, hitting it and causing it to roll for an additional one or two centimeters, would that satisfy the...

Re: Screw Task

If you attach an object to the screw does it count as a separate object or part of the screw I would consider it to be part of the screw. I wouldn’t. The event description never specified that the moved object has to be removable or unattached. I would consider an attached object to be a part of th...

Re: String Task

How long does it take for nichrome wire to break a fishing line or string It should be almost instantaneous. Otherwise, you probably don't enough current to sufficiently heat up the wire. Many years ago we made one suck up some time - can't remember how much, exactly, but probably at least ten or f...
