Re: Boomilever B/C

....the base had not chance of moving and this allowed for much more fixed testing and predictable results... You're absolutely correct in that there will be some additional instability and maybe we'll see some students come up with clever ways to overcome this challenge. This might end up shaking ...

Re: Boomilever B/C

I still don't understand the set up with a J hook. Does one just have their boomilever dangle from the hook since it isn't secured to the wall? I'm quite confused... Yes the boom will be dangling on the hook. Basically, the only thing that students will be able to adjust prior to loading the sand w...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Are you allowed to put the nut and washer after the attachment base like last year or must the nut and washer stay adjacent to the wall? Based off my understanding of the rules there'll be no adjustment of the testing wall at all. You'll slip your boom over the j-hook and attach the loading block a...

Re: Forestry B/C

SoCal states was an exciting day! I was able to help out my team with a silver medal in Forestry; however, my partner and I were not able to defend our state championship from last year, as we lost to Carmel Valley (they won 1st). The test was fairly simple; it was a mix of general knowledge questi...

Re: Mission Possible B

Our team was at a regional competition this past week ( I'm advising on MP) and one team had 4 students and a parent helping setup during the 30 min window. I asked the event supervisor ( from that school) if that was allowed and he told me " we're just being relaxed here." Not wanting to be a " li...

Re: task c

I was just thinking... What if you have a weight/mass, like one of those that science teachers put on their scales to demonstrate how to measure mass, and it is filled with small metal beads. I do not know if the beads are made out of lead or not. Will the judges give you the benefit of the doubt b...

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

Just to clarify.. Shorter the ramp better the score? Thanks ! :) Not necessarily. A shorter ramp will give you a lower height score, but it will also increase your speed score. You have to find the ideal height and speed combination in order to score well. Thanks! What height do competitors usually...

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

Are most people going with higher ramps or lower ramps here? Chalker, do you know why the height was weighted so heavily? I would assume that people are going to do whatever ramp is best for them. I would that think most competitors will be optimizing their vehicle to fit their ramp rather than the...

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

Chalker, I recall in this thread last season that some posts were discussing optimum shaped ramps that allowed the maximum linear velocity to be reached in a minimum amount of time. I translated this to mean that these ramps were shorter in total length than, say, one that is circular in shape with...
