Re: Remote Sensing C

The people who say you can't study for this event are the ones that don't like the event. It is possible and completely necessary to study for it. I would suggest looking at the Remote Sensing , especially the 2nd link under 2010 links, which is to a Canadian tutorial that is a good starting place, ...

Re: Transporting Engineering Events

Even if you stick tons of "FRAGILE" stickers all over the box, it doesn't help. At the luggage carousel at various airports, I've seen tons of half-flattened/slightly crushed/definitely beat-up boxes with said stickers plastered all over. I think when they see the fragile stickers they ma...

Re: Egg-O-Naut C

There should be an adaptor with the launcher if the pump doesn't work. Although it should work fine, I have the same launcher, and just bought a bike pump and it works fine, just make sure you latch the pump so that it seals with the tube from the launcher, that may be the issue.

Re: Egg-O-Naut C

It seems like that would be more effective for model rockets, I'm not sure how well it would work for water rockets, or if it is necessary. You can always wrap a rubber band around the parachute lines so that it will act as a streamer all the way down, but you can still see if it deploys or not.

Re: Remote Sensing C

I don't think there is a cycle for topics, I think they choose at the beginning of the year based on whats going on, because it was Mars for a few years, but it has changed every year for the past two.

Re: Egg-O-Naut C

Oh OK. I guess that means they used a smaller bottle to hold the egg, so it looks like the chute is bigger. And New Trier's cone is actually slightly wider than the 2 liter bottle. I wasn't doing it based on measurements off the image, I was just guesstimating from what I saw at the competition, so...

Re: Egg-O-Naut C

I am looking at the Solon parachute. It is really big. Estimating assuming the bottle holding the egg is 4" dia.: Inflated dia. = 6'+8" Assuming perfect hemisphere: Flat dia. = 10'+6" Anyone know the actual size? Was it the largest chute at nats? What was the biggest parachute posted...

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C

now that DP's topic is freshwater, what do you think they will ask on the tests? its such a narrow topic.. Its not really a narrow topic, it can include everything from lakes and rivers to aquifers, which is really quite a lot of stuff, especially with the basic hydrology that is probably necessary...

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C

You may have to know what types of organisms live in certain areas, but I doubt you will need to know about the organisms in detail, they usually leave that for ecology.

Re: AP Calc or Sci Oly?

But doing Science Olympiad looks good, so I wouldn't drop it just because of Calc, your coach should understand, and will probably let you stay on the team even if you can't do the class.

Re: Egg-O-Naut C

Anyone know the times of the rockets that medaled at nats? 1 - Solon , 7+ minutes (i don't know when they stop timing, but it could be seen from the launch site for 7-10 minutes, and was in the air even longer) 2 - Centreville, 4 min 35 sec (not sure if this is with or without bonuses) 3 - New Trie...

Re: Can't Judge a Powder B

Hmm. My partner and I concluded that it was the sodium sulfide. After all, sodium sulfide (Na2S) contains 2 molecules of sulfur, even in its hydrate form. Both the compound and its hydrate emit hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. BTW, what the heck is ferric acid? The reactioms to it w...
