flat, smooth, solid plane

the platform for the final task must be a "flat, smooth, solid plane with no raised edges". I am wondering if consensus is that flat head screws down from the top of the platform and flush with the platform would be considered acceptable. Or possibly we should fill in with some putty. I gu...

Re: Turning the screw

We used that same microswitch 4 times, sometimes for closing a circuit and sometimes for opening (limit switch).

Re: Turning the screw

also, you can use that switch to open or close a circuit. we used one to start and one as a limit switch to stop the current

Re: Turning the screw

we used microswitches, small switches with levers attached. here is one very similar to what we ordered. they are out of stock on the ones we used. sometimes there are clearance deals and prices go way down. these work great for DC. http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/SMS-196/SPDT-SNAP-A...

Re: Turning the screw

We used a couple of 5/16" collets to attach the axle of a small DC motor to a piece of 1/8" threaded rod. Filed the rod and the axle down halfway and it works pretty well. but maybe a piece of string wound around with a weight might turn a screw if the bearings/bushings were good.

Re: Final Task

Hi Chalker, an off topic question. We are doing this for the first time this year, and the comments in other threads are making us nervous about being disqualified. Any chance we could take a few pictures and get someone with experience to tell us if we made any obvious goofs? Thanks in advance, John.

Re: Gear wording typo?

Thanks skink, my previous unanswered question is from more than 3 weeks ago. I agree it is safest to assume the axle must turn. I read this as not requiring homemade axles/bushings, only homemade gears.

Re: Gear wording typo?

Does anyone else agree that axles in general do not turn?

I have submitted questions twice at the link that Schrodingerscat provided above, with flatline response. I am looking for the email of a person who might be able to reply. TIA.

Gear wording typo?

4k. Use a gear system of at least 3 homemade, non-electrical, non-commercially constructed gears, so that the final gear turns at least 360 degrees and the turning of the final axle causes the next action. In our setup the axles dont turn. This seems to obviously be a typo. It is unclear to me wher...
