Re: Protein Modeling C

Hey, I'm just studying PARP-1 based off of 3OD8 and I see that they're a few ligands/amino acids (not sure what they are), but on proteopedia it calls them MSE can someone explain to me what exactly it is and if it has anything to do with the function of PARP...Thanks :D They are modified amino aci...

Re: Experimental Design B/C

This is how the event is usually run. Alternately, they'll give you something completely open-ended that really doesn't give you much to work with. How does open-ended leave you not much to work with? Wouldn't a broader, more open-ended topic leave you more possible experiments? "Doesn't give ...

Re: Experimental Design B/C

This brings up a good point: sadly, the goal of Experimental Design is not to do good science, but to do a good write-up. It's often to your advantage to intentionally introduce some nice, controlled form of error that you can point to and say, "Look, here's [error] that we could fix by doing ...

Re: Experimental Design B/C

DV with paper airplanes tends to be descent time. Distance is difficult to measure consistently because many paper airplanes do not fly straight. Maybe our ED team fails at making and throwing airplanes (after reading this thread, we practiced with airplanes and paper clips) and we found that time ...

Re: Fermi Questions C

4 days before competition, I've been thrown in. So... besides lots of constants to be memorized, what else should be on my list of things to do? Get used to the idea of what is reasonable. For example: if your final answer is supposed to be the mass of the moon in kg, and you're getting 2 or 3, is ...

Re: Protein Modeling C

1) For the beta sheet are the "kinks" in the model that we place them exactly on the amino acid lines? |amino acid| 2cm It doesn't matter exactly where in the amino acid you kink the Toober, but you should be consistent: adjacent kinks should be at the same point in the amino acids, so th...

Re: Forensics C

Both magnesium sulfate and calcium nitrate form a precipitate with NaOH. The only way to tell them apart at that point is the flame test. If there was no color, then it's magnesium sulfate. If there was a striking orange flame color, it's calcium nitrate. You're right, my previous post was incorrec...

Re: Experimental Design B/C

amount of weight carried, person throwing, design of plane, height launched at... endless possibilities. We tried design of plane once... It was..bad. haha. Bad in what way? What specifically were you changing (the entire design, just a piece of it?), and what was your DV? Time in the air? Di...

Re: Protein Modeling C

Thanks Phenyl! You know, if/when my team goes to nats I need to get your autograph...you're my protein modeling hero! :P Can I second that? (Okay, so maybe nats is a long shot for us, but you never know...) Aww, you're making me blush. Seriously, though, it means a lot to me when people come up to ...

Re: Protein Modeling C

This is probably a dumb question, but I was googling PARP and there are a few different ones within the family; we are focusing on PARP1, correct? Thanks! :) *Edit: Also, what's a conformational shift? Yes, the one we're looking at is PARP-1, formerly known just as PARP (before the other members of...
