Re: Ohio 2020
It does feel like a bit of an overreaction, and not taking into account the feelings of the competitors, whereas cancellation was much more understandable in other states. While I didn't make the decision, I was closely involved over the previous 4 days in numerous discussions regarding the situati...

Re: Ohio 2020
Here's the actual announcement which was sent out and will be posted shortly to the Ohio SO Website: Dear Ohio Science Olympiad Community, As you may be aware, The Ohio State University recently announced that the university is suspending face-to-face instruction and moving to a virtual online class...

Re: 2020-2021 Events
Regardless, the prevalence of computer science is increasing so steeply that it really needs a better place in Science Olympiad. I would be okay with pretty much anything. This is a common opinion of many of us on the national rules committee, and we've been discussing it for many years now. The ch...

Re: Solar Power B/C [TRIAL]
That's on purpose. We essentially took the Thermo rules and inverted the process. In stead of keeping heat you need to collect heat.

Re: Sounds of Music C
A word of caution for all future tournaments: First of all, please make sure that you have re-downloaded the updated Sounds of Music scoresheet (v0.5) from soinc.org/sounds-music-c . Secondly, even though SOINC has updated the spreadsheet, it should NOT be imported into Google Sheets. Using Google ...

Re: 2020-2021 Events
Given that each committee is focused on separate topic areas, there is a structural barrier to "accidental overlaps". If the Chemistry Committee focuses on chemistry events, the Physics Committee on physics events, etc. then there should always be an appropriate diversity of events and to...

Re: 2020-2021 Events
There's absolutely no reason to remove a perfectly good enjoyable build event just to replace it with another electronics event that seems almost identical to Detector Building. I will be SO FR*CKING P*SSED if I NEVER get to do Trajectory again - the thing I've been looking forward towards my entir...

Re: Rules Clarification
Nothing on this site is official. I would send a clarification to the rules clarification area on soinc.org. This is correct. Unofficially though, I can tell you we put that honest attempt language in the rules to explicitly prevent people from 'guessing' the ratios. It sure sounds like that's what...

Re: WHY the metric system exclusively, ESPECIALLY for builds
Anyone have insight into why all of Olympiad uses the metric system exclusively? This doesn't seem to reflect the real world very well, at least not for any of the industries I've worked in. It's especially frustrating on builds where they use 30cm to approximate a foot. Except its NOT a foot. So t...

Re: Binder Events
As one of the key people behind the scenes pushing for more 'binders', I can tell you that there are several key reasons: 1. Any type of binder / page limitation puts a significant burden on the event supervisor to check ever team's resource. And no matter what language we use, it seems there are al...
