Re: Astronomy C

I was re-reading the rules and then I came upon this: "Each team member is permitted to bring either a laptop computer or one 3-ring binder (any size) containing information in any form from any source." And I'm honestly not sure if it's too good to be true, because, I initially thought th...

Re: Protein Modeling C

Another question . . . What exactly do you DO to model the proteins??? Do you stick tacks in the toobers for molecules? Are we representing the molecular structure? And how exactly can you build such a complex Klf4 protein from the image on the computer? Any tips??? (Sorry, I'm new to this event.) ...

Re: Balsa or Bass

Because if a tower breaks it will be harder to distinguish why it broke with balsa due to so many different variable. i think that with a little experience, a little bit of attention to details such as the mass of the balsa sticks used and a slow motion video, it is pretty easy to distinguish why a...

Re: Ecology B/C

Hey guys, I was wondering, do the CDs on soinc really help with the studying for the tests? Because they claim to be for this years event, but as I was reading the ecology one (under bio-earth science CD) I noticed this: "In order for the children to better understand the nature of the forest w...

Re: Sounds of Music C

My partner and I are making chimes and an ocarina. I'm in charge of the chimes but I'm not really sure how to getstarted. What would be the best material to use? Preferably not that expensive. The ocarina is an extremely interesting idea... But, my team thought about chimes as well, and well, the r...

Re: Mousetrap Vehicle C

I know for one thing that last year (at regionals, which is strangely harder than states where I live) a team brought a vehicle with three wheel and the wheels were HUGE. And it was just crazy fast. So, I always thought that the smaller the ratio between the wheel to the axle the better? (correct me...

Re: Designs

Oh, I see. =/ Oh wells. So, then what do you guys think about bending Bass wood for the four "pillars" of the tower? Because Bass would is extremely bendable against the grain, but extremely hard to destroy along the grain. So, if you bending four pillars and put them together with support...

Re: Designs

Well. I mean, just the technique used. As in, glue would also be pointless. My teacher was saying that if it was done correctly, it would kinda be like on giant I-beam but more complex. Every part of the tower would be pushing against another part of the tower and eventually making a state of "...

Re: Designs

Oh, that's a shame, I thought it could be really cool/fun xD Thanks for the info though, now I won't be wasting my time. (As much as usual at least) Edit But I mean, it broke because of an Earthquake? I'm pretty sure we won't be having those during competition, so couldn't a design like that actuall...

Re: Astronomy C

So guys, I was wondering, what do you put inside your binder? Because my partner and I have no idea at all :( I know for other events (such as ecology) you generally want diagrams? Correct if I'm wrong. But what would you want for astronomy? especially since we're allowed a WHOLE binder.
