Re: Yale Invitational
I really wish I was going, but the date was the same as the MIT invitational, which meant we were going there. I wonder why they put the dates on the same day.

Re: Hovercraft B/C
The rules say we can't touch the hovercraft after the motor has been started, but does that imply indirect touching as well, i.e. a string?

Re: Optics B/C
Just for clarification, when the rules state
does this include materials used for the laser shoot? All reference materials to be used during all parts of the competition must be initially secured within a 3 ring binder...

Re: Astronomy C
Sort of a noob here, but is there any places to find help to interpret light curves. some of them just don't seem to give enough information. Like if an exoplanet is transiting its host star. how do I go about calculating distance, magnitude. Is it mostly guess and check, or are there specific thin...

Re: Astronomy C
I've been looking for information about Henize 2-248, which is on the official list. However, all I found was information about Henize 2-428. Are these DSOs equivalent?

Re: Astronomy C
I think it is doable, but the phrasing you describe is a bit vague, perhaps the question was more detailed? I'm just going to take a few guesses, and let's see. Also, in theory stars on in HR diagram should follow common formulas like the Stefan-Boltzmann law or the mass-luminosity relationship (un...

Re: Astronomy C
This is a question from the Yale Invitational. What we were given was the transit light curve of the host star, it's apparent magnitude (11.2), the period of the system (25 hours), the peak wavelength (408.5 nm), how much the wavelength varies by (0.592 pm). The first question was to find the temper...

Re: Hovercraft 2016-2017
A minor quibble I have with the scoring is that one's score depends on the mass of the heaviest successful vehicle. It kinda makes it difficult to compare results of different competitions. Since the maximum mass is 2000g, couldn't we have it compared to that? That way results from different competi...

Re: Hovercraft 2016-2017
Those types of designs are completely within the intent of the rules. What we DON'T want to allow is devices with wheels that are basically electric vehicles. Do you have any suggestions as to how to better clarify this in the rules? I feel the source of confusion is the use to the word "levit...
