Re: SOSC NCAA March Madness Pool
Skill is useful yes. For what it's worth, I would currently be tied for first at 67 points if I had done the smart thing and just submitted the bracket I'm using for my real pools. That's the one I tried on. I only do fantasy football. Even though I'm a much bigger MLB than NFL fan, fantasy baseball...

Re: International science olympiad
Ha this idea has been suggested before and everyone has agreed that it would be a whole lot of fun. And also completely unrealistic. But hey, you could always dream. Not to mention that the US would get absolutely obliterated... If you want International Science, then you have SIX options. Make the ...

Re: Massachusetts 2009
Yeah, I'm not really sure why MA has such difficulty getting teams. And some of the teams it has hardly even count. I know that in Road Scholar at least, at least 3 of the 11 teams that actually showed up for the event didn't even try... they more or less sat and talked and didn't even touch the map...

Re: Proposed Individual Qualification for Nationals
Is there really that much difference between having 60 teams at Nats and, say, 65-70 teams, from giving the top 5-10 states (by number of teams and/or past performance) one extra team at Nats? Yes. OSU and Juniata in 03 and 04 only took 54 teams from each division, not 60. Why? Because for some rea...

Re: Write it Do it
At the very beginning my partner and I would put a materials list and the beginning, but as Pleiades says, we quickly discovered it was a bad idea. It uses precious time that you need to use writing about where to put the pieces. Our reasoning was as follows: A materials list should theoretically no...

Re: Write it Do it
The writing is the most important part of the event. Theoretically, if you're a good writer, you could just hand your directions to anyone and they could reproduce the structure. Of course, that never happens and what it comes down to is the team knowing each other. But you can't really say one is h...

Re: SAT Scores?
ACT is so much more clear and straightforward. That said, I've never understood the "it's the way the questions are worded" argument. I mean.. it's a bunch of multiple choice questions. Read what they ask for, and then pick the one that you think gives them what they want. Not complicated....

Re: Road Scholar
That's not exactly the best way to profile. Here's how we used to do it: Take a piece of printer paper, and line up the 2 points, placing big marks at each end point. Now, going along between the endpoints, at every contour line you see, place a little dash on the edge of the paper at the spot. So b...
