Unknowns are a fact of life in real world engineering. You can estimate them, gather data on them, maybe but bounds on them, etc. But in the end you cannot eliminate them. In the rules it say "competitors must be allowed to heft" so with mass and weight objects we are going to be allowed to touch those.
