we had the same problem..... we switched to dvds and they work better.

Also... The rules say the trigger has 2 be vertical?

The trigger PENCIL has to be held vertically when pressing the metal/plastic bait pedal. Hope that cleared it up.

No, the rules do not specify a material, except for the fixed point which must be a paperclip.

Also, do people suggest to make the car with an adjustable mechanism to allow for calibration, or to make it fixed and eliminate inconsistencies?

My choice has always been to include some sort of a steering mechanism in the car. You may build the vehicle so that it will travel perfectly straight, but overtime it will be altered. A fixed body/axle doesn't allow for adjustment or correction later on.

That's called a Pull Arm. The easiest way is to simply zip-tie it to the mousetrap and then maybe reinforce with hot glue. This is rather robust and also allows for easy removal if necessary.

I'm using some clamps...not exactly sure what they're called but they're U-shaped and then they go through some sort of holding device and are attached with washers... I used them to clamp the rod onto the arm of the mousetrap... I'll find out the name of the clamps, sorry I didn't know!
