At the bottom of the list is a supply company that you can buy a R&M set from for practice. However, those three are not included (I mean, they're pretty expensive )thsom wrote:Why is there an asterisk next to silver and diamond and gold in the list?

Hrmm, I'm sure that it'll change a bit more that. Looking at the 2006 --> 2008 list had at least a dozen changes overall. Not much, but enough to give some diversity in this event. And to be honest, I really love the rule of addition of new specimens by Event Supervisors - not many events allow for this amount of wiggle room. If I get a chance, I'd definitely love to throw in some tough IDsiYOA wrote:yeah like at most 1 specimen will be different.Kadabrar wrote:Totally need to get a head start for next year. Re: Rocks and Minerals B/C
I was taking a test, and one of the samples was a huge rock. It looked like chunks of red sandstone with calcite veins about 1cm thick separated the pieces. Does anyone have any idea about what it is?

Pegmatite, maybe. Also, I've seen chunks of gneiss that could look like that. Were the calcite veins parallel?havendude wrote:I was taking a test, and one of the samples was a huge rock. Except for the red sandstone part, that sounds remotely like perthite, although that's not on the list.havendude wrote:I was taking a test, and one of the samples was a huge rock. Re: Rocks and Minerals B/C
We also took the rocks and minerals test for the PA C division, and thought that was a sample of quartzite (geode?) with orthoclase and then quartz crystals inbetween.

Re: Rocks and Minerals B/C
I've been finding mixed definitions on this––what is Jasper? An opaque chalcedony? An opaque chalcedony with ferric inclusions? A chert?
And if it's debatable, what definition would you use to identify it in competition?

Re: Rocks and Minerals B/C
From what I understand, jasper's just a variety of chert. Basically, it's chert that isn't black (that's flint) or white. It's typically red or green.Paleofreakazoid wrote:I've been finding mixed definitions on this––what is Jasper? An opaque chalcedony? An opaque chalcedony with ferric inclusions? A chert?
