Anyways, since there are so much info on crystal healing, do you think there may be a slight chance that some questions we might get on our test will contain some of that?
Never. There will never ever be a question about that. Ever.
You sound very very sure. Why?

I'm having a little trouble IDing a New York-only mineral. Willemite has so many forms, colors and habits, but a key aspect is that it glows under Ultraviolet light. However, I can't seem to figure out if Willemite remains glowing after the UV is removed. Do you think that the state competition would constantly keep a UV light over the sample? I can't seem to figure out any other way to distinguish it from other specimens (and have yet to see a live sample).

I think it has everything on the national list with the exception of silver, gold, and diamond.

Any last minute things you guys think I should put in my binder? Any unusual questions you weren't prepared for at your competition, maybe?

Oh, remember your state mineral and rock. We had questions on those. And double check your glossary. Because our regionals test consisted of purely information, no identification required, so I was quite thankful I had made sure our binder was as thorough as it could get in the time I had to make it single-handedly....

make a chart with the metamorphic rocks and their parent rocks if you have not already because i guarantee you they will ask that.
Also, bring a copy of the event rules b/c the rock cycle is pretty helpful. In fact, for one of our stations at regionals, all we had to do was copy down the rock cycle from the event rules. it was useful during invitationals too.

And of course, regular pyrite is called "fool's gold."

Anyways, just as a conversation starter..
What specimens/ questions have you all been coming across at your competitions?
