Absorption lines are where parts of the continuous spectrum of light given off by a star get, well, absorbed by something (usually a cool cloud of gas) between the star and us.

Pretty good explanation here: http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/qu ... hofer.html
They talk about Fraunhofer lines in the sun's spectrum, but the same logic applies to any stellar absorption spectra.

Any ideas on what RFTS will look like next year? As far as I know, the event has changed very slightly from past years.
