What is MathCounts? Is it like Math League?

If you had seen my question, I was asking if it was like Math League, another math competition that I don't know a lot about. If you've seen the wikipedia page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_League, you'll notice that it has almost no information, and I didn't feel like going through a couple of websites to find information. I was just mildly curious as to what it was, although it doesn't matter now.
Anyway, I've been curious if any teams have made hotel and travel reservations before the state competition. Does anybody know of this? I'm fairly sure it's been discussed before.

Last year one team who thought they were going to win States bought their plane tickets before the competition.
