It's that time of the week once again when we recap the results of the previous weekend! Tournaments held last Friday and Saturday were Pennsylvania B/C, North Carolina B/C, Kentucky B/C, Louisiana B/C, Michigan B/C, Ohio B/C, and Virginia B/C. Here's what happened:
  • In Pennsylvania, Shady Side Academy defended its state title from last year, with Strath Haven Middle School finishing 2nd for the 2nd straight year. Stroudsburg Junior High School moved up from 7th last year to come in 3rd. For Division C, Harriton High School topped the competition for the 16th straight year. Penncrest High School finished 2nd to qualify for nationals for the 9th time after missing out by a mere 2 points last year to Bayard Rustin High School, which this year came in 4th. This time around, it was Conestoga High School which barely missed out on nationals, finishing in 3rd place behind Penncrest by the razor-thin margin of 1 point.
  • In North Carolina, a brand-new champion emerged in Division B: Fred J. Carnage Middle School. They were followed by Piedmont Middle School, last year's state champion, in 2nd place and J.M. Alexander Middle School in 3rd. Jay M. Robinson Middle School, last year's runner-up, finished 4th. In Division C, Raleigh Charter High School reclaimed the state title after missing out on nationals completely last year. At the awards ceremony, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (last year's state champion) was announced as the 2nd place finisher, but later arbitration determined that William G. Enloe High School (initially announced as 3rd place) had been improperly tier 2'd in an event. Therefore, Enloe actually finished 2nd overall and NCSSM finished 3rd. This is the first year since 2007 that NCSSM has failed to qualify for nationals.
  • In Kentucky, Division B was dominated by Russell Independent Middle School and Meyzeek Middle School - Russell teams finished 1st, 3rd, and 4th, while Meyzeek teams finished 2nd, 5th, and 6th. Division C was dominated by duPont Manual High School and Russell Independent High School. Manual teams finished 1st and 3rd, while Russell teams finished 2nd and 4th. Of the past 11 state tournaments, Manual has won 5 and Russell has won 6. The 3rd place school and 5th place team overall was Madison Central High School.
  • In Louisiana, St. John Berchmans Catholic Cathedral qualified for nationals for the 5th year in a row, while Our Lady of Fatima School finished 2nd and Glasgow Middle School finished 3rd. In Division C, Benjamin Franklin High School edged out Baton Rouge Magnet High School by 4 points to claim the state title for the first time since 1996. Baton Rouge Magnet had beaten Benjamin Franklin by only 2 points last year. New Iberia Senior High School came in 3rd.
  • Meads Mill Middle School dominated Michigan Division B, finishing over 150 points ahead of 2nd place Lakeshore Middle School. White Pines Middle School followed in 3rd. In Division C, Grand Haven High School (3rd place at nationals last year) stretched its win streak to 8 years, and Troy High School finished in 2nd to qualify for national for the 1st time since 2002. International Academy Central finished in 3rd place, 4 points behind Troy, and Stevenson High School (last year's Michigan runner-up) finished 4th.
  • In Ohio, reigning national champion Solon Middle School won for the 5th straight year, and Mentor Memorial Middle School came in 2nd to qualify for nationals for the 1st time ever. Magsig Middle School came in 3rd. At the high school level, reigning national champion Solon High School defended its state title, while Centerville High School came in 2nd to qualify for nationals for the 11th straight year and for the 25th time in Ohio Science Olympiad's 28-year history. For Division C, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology captured its first state title after finishing in a close 3rd place last year.
