height was extremely crucial at our state comp. we made sure ours was 1m high (turns out it was 99cm...close enough). other people seemed to have missed that part of the scoring. there were some good sorters that were only like 30cm tall or less! we had a tech problem during our sorting and had to touch it (10% penalty at our comp) and still managed 4th place. so i would say it was extremely crucial.

So I guess the shorter your sorter the better right? And how was the word "height" defined by? According to the rules its from the lowest point of the coin opening to the ground. Is the lowest point on the coin opening always the highest point on the device?

Did that 30+ cm accurate coin sorter do better than yours without the penalty?

Whoa. what? your goal is to make it exactly 1 meter tall. then you get that number (100 cm) multiplied by the amount of change you sort (100 cents, 236 cents, etc). high is good. short is bad.

So wouldn't a smaller sorter be advantageous? Lets say your height was 1 then your score would be........wait a second let me reread the rules....... If I'm wrong.....I just wasted 1 and a half hours trying to drop our machine's height.

there are a LOT of subtraction symbols in there. it took me a while to understand as well. try punching in different numbers for height and keep the amount of change sorted a constant. then you'll probably get it.

Gah......Well I guess adding height is a lot easier than cutting.....So how is the height determined then? Supposedly its dist between low point of coint opening and the surface where the ad rests on.. Can you add a 60 cm of wood underneath your device to get it to the max of 100 cm? Or do you have to remake the ad so that you incorporate that extra 60cm of height increase............I hate this....

we put ours on en elevated platform. Our coin slot was the top so im not sure if they measure from the bottom to the coin slot or to the highest point. for adding weight try to make the add-ons as significant as possible...if that makes sense. that way you can at least argue it to the judges.

how is coin slot defined? What if you have a slide? will coin slot be determined at the top or at the bottom of the slide?

We thought that shorter was better until we realized that the |Height – 100| was absolute value. This makes 1 meter the target number . It turned out it was a whole lot easier than making it a zero.

Anyway, aim for 1 meter.

could you elaborate when you mean by aim for 1 meter? I can't really find that part where it says you need 1m? I understand that the "height" is supposed to be as close to 100cm.. Oh crap 100cm=1m.........I knew that.......
