Write It Do It B/C

Postby Jim_R » July 31st, 2013, 8:50 am

-The path of the Administrator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

-Nothing\'s gonna get deleted. We\'re gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what\'s Fonzie like? Come on, what\'s Fonzie like?
-Cool?
-Correctamundo. And that\'s what we\'re gonna be. We\'re gonna be cool. Now, I\'m gonna count to three, and when I count three, you let go of your mouse, and back away from the keyboard. But when you do it, you do it cool. Ready? One... two... three.

There is quite a lot of that sort of information on the Write It Do It Wiki. The simplest advice I can give you is to practice a lot, with lots of different materials, because anything could show up at competition.

Practice a lot with pipe cleaners, and try to make a box full of common materials to use for practicing. It's amazing how handy a big box of stuff is.
I bet you had to read this twice

Our team this year is having everyone to a practice run of the event to see who is the best, is this a good idea?

Depends. As much as there is improvement over time from practicing, sometimes flukes happen or something just clicks with a practice run. But, this could also be a chance to see who has some idea of what the writing should be like, and identifying people who are good at following the instructions. I don't think it's a bad idea, I just think maybe it's making the process of picking people to do it a little bit too complicated?

In the parameters, it says that "Pieces that are connected correctly beyond the incorrect connection will be counted in the score.

No penalty will be assessed for parts that were not used."
What does this mean? what does "beyond the incorrect connection" mean?
Thanks!

Let's say you're working something that has connecting pieces. Parts A, B, C, and D are hubs. Parts 1, 2, and 3 are their connectors.

The correct format is like so:

(A)======1=======(B)===2===(C)==3==(D)

You accidentally use two of the same hub like so:

(A)======1=======(C)===2===(C)==3==(D)

You would be scored as correct up until the mistake (green). The mistake would be incorrect (red), but you put everything else in the right place, so that still counts too, even though you used the wrong hub. You also won't be penalized for not using hub (B).

Have you read and re-read the rules? Have you read the wiki? Both are important to read. Or are those two sources still confusing?

Yeah, I've read them all thoroughly. I just need some tips on what it's like to BE in the actual competition, maybe some help from a past competitor.

Besides practicing with a partner, what are some ways to help learn to write faster? My partner and I have a basic idea of how we're going to explain things such as legos, but I just take too long to put down everything I want to say even when writing as briefly as possible.

Also, how do you like to approach models that are difficult to understand? (As in one that it's very difficult to figure out how it was even connected in the first place)

Now that you've done that... BREATHE! As we say in physics class, "When in doubt, break it down into component parts!" Clarify and re-clarify, but not to the point of wasting time. Work quickly and efficiently, mentally tracking how much of the object you've written about and pacing yourself accordingly. If you have time at the end, add more details to clarify even further! I hesitate to give further, more detailed tips because there's a great many things I've worked out with my partner through practice and COMMUNICATION. Don't hesitate (to the builder) to highlight and circle confusing parts during practice runs and then discuss what was intended!

Good luck, don't hesitate to send me a message if you want some of those more detailed tips! :D

When explaining dimmensions (ex. 3x6) does the "x" need to be defined?

Not a bad idea to just put "by (x)" the first time you use it or define it at the top. If I were judging I probably wouldn't even notice :D but I would hate for someone to get docked for such a simple thing...
