I've never done this event (I'm currently in AP Chem) but I think that the stoich calculations will probably use insane things such as complexes, free radicals, obscure, massive hydrocarbons, and such.

What sets apart teams in Chem Lab?

Knowing the concepts inside and out. General chem knowledge helps too. Even as somebody who is currently tutoring AP Chemistry, my teammate and I will have a hard time here in Maryland. It is insanely competitive.

It's at the discretion of the supervisor, but I think most times chances are it'll be phenolphthalein, because that'll be what supervisors are most familiar with. They might also give you a choice of indicators, I think I had that happen to me at least once.

How do you choose which indicator to use? I don't think you can predict the pH of the equivalence point until you actually do the titration (assuming you don't know the concentration of the solution being titrated, of course), and even then...

Would you be given the Ka's of the indicators, at least?

Or would you be presented with 3 indicators - one that changes at a low pH; another that changes at pH 7; and another that changes at a higher pH, and then go from there?

I believe in my case it was the second. However, if they do give you a choice of indicator, then they will also almost certainly give you enough information about the indicators and the substances involved for you to pick the proper one.

Shouldn't the rules read "colorimeter" instead of "calorimeter" in 4a? I don't think they're trying to imply thermodynamics/thermochemistry is part of the event...
