I did Fossils for one year and that was an epic fail. How should I go about studying and learning the bugs? What sort of information will I have to know about them besides distinguishing characteristics and identification?

• Some interesting facts, I guess

I'm assuming that most questions will be about ecology and human impact, along with the identification.

I wrote a test for my high school as just a simple precursor test to help decide who's gonna do the event. Once we do it next week, I can post it on the text exchange.

Any thoughts on the usefulness of the Kaufman Field Guide for Insects of North America? Lots of detailed pictures, short blurbs on various species on the side... I'm just not sure if it covers everything needed.

Will we have to distinguish the larvae of families of Odonata? I don't mean between dragonflies and damselflies; that's easy. Something like them giving a damselfly larva and us having to write either Coenagrionidae or Lestidae? I do know the difference, but it's so subtle, and they might not show it.

EDIT: Also, for Isoptera, will we have to identify the termites as workers, soldiers, or reproductive adults? I'm guessing that the winged adults will be on the test, but I don't know.

This is my first year doing Science Olympiad. I am in middle school B and I am just confirming that we just need to know the 30 orders of the insects, not the orders and the 100 families. Thanks!

Division B only needs to know the orders. Lucky ducks.
But if you're going into Division C next year and you're planning on doing Entomology, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a headstart on those families.
