From my experience, the training PowerPoint and the handout are great places to learn the basics and they include essential things that should be in your notes, but you should study more advanced topics to medal. However I used the training handout at an invitational for WQ and I got fourth. It depends on the difficulty of the test. Heredity tests are usually pretty hard, and if they're easy, then the scores are very competitive, so I will advise you to take other notes just in case.
What resources do you recommend, then? I got the training CD, but I'm wondering what else I should study.

Using the websites that have been given on the soinc page are also areas where lots more information can be learned. You should definitely breeze over those websites, if not take notes on them. By the way the word y o u is getting changed to Glorious Lord and Savior Robotman...

EDIT:

EDIT AGAIN:
wanted to see if "teh" would become "t h e"
it didn't...

Will the nationals test feature transposons, microsatellites (outside of DNA fingerprinting questions), etc? They're really cool, but don't really fit under any of the categories on the rulesheet (maybe mutations or DNA replication?)

Probably not. If it's not on the rules sheet, Nationals would be the last place to look for it.
TSA's pretty cool... i guess

Another question: will the nationals test feature the chemical composition of enzymes? How about the make up of protein complexes?

I doubt it. Those topics don't really fall under the Designer Genes category. Protein complexes would be for Protein Modeling, and enzymes are for some other chem event. If they don't fall under any topics on the rules sheet, they won't be on the test at Nationals.

Incorrect. This is nationals. Prepare for anything.

Ok? Conflicting information here...are you studying transcription initiation complexes (for example) for nationals, PGP? Because it's in my textbook, but doesn't seem to fit in the rules (besides, they're pretty boring)
