A question for those who may know more about this topic than I do: if questions are limited to static equilibrium per 4.a.iii, how could they involve kinetic energy as suggested in 4.a.ii?

I can't seem to find any practice tests for Simple Machines. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!

It's a brand new event this year, thus there isn't likely to be any practice tests yet. Why don't you take a stab at making one yourself and sharing with everyone via the test exchange?

PLTW has some great rudimentary resources concerning simple machines, there are several links below...

In the Compound Machines Event, can the fulcrum points of the two levers and the connection point between the two levers be changed while measuring of the unknown mass?

I believe that section 4.b.v.of the rules says you are allowed.

The rules say that all reference materials must be in a 3-ring binder. Does this mean just one 3-ring binder, or just that all notes must be in some 3-ring binder? e.g. a team has a binder for part 1 and another for part 2.
The reason I ask is that I've seen the use of explicitly 1 binder for other events, while this seems more ambiguous.
Science, yeah!

Made a new team. 7th place at NH states. Officially the champions of Vermont.

2015-2016 Events:
Air Trajectory, It's About Time, EXPD, and WIDI.

I've submitted a FAQ for this onto soinc.org, and will post the response when it comes :)

EDIT: The reply says that only one 3-ring binder may be used.

What to Build?

I am having a horrible time trying to picture and imagine what is supposed to be built for the Compound Machines event. Does anyone have an idea of where I could look for ideas?

For compound machines, the device is a class 1 lever with the 'load' attached to the 'effort' of a class 2 lever. Wikipedia has a good overview of the various types of levers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever
