I've never posted here before, but I've read this forum a lot. And I have to tell you, this really helped me in the event. As a first time science olympiad student, astronomy felt WAY over my head. so much reading, reserarching etc. But paralleling what celtics09 said, thanks to everyone here who posted and helped out. It also helped me to get first at state! Perhaps I'll see you at nationals celtics! :D

I got 3rd at regionals, and it was pretty much me that did a lot of the work. The biggest problem I had was trying to relate apparent and absolute magnitude to things like distance and luminosity. How would you figure that out?

My next problem was the Julian Calendar. How do the dates work for that?

I actually printed that out and put it in my binder. I couldn't find the specific fourmula for apparent/absolute magnitude.

The Julian Date makes sense now, thanks!
