Even though we were way worse than Muscatel at State and I worship them as SciOly geniuses of SoCal, I will say that yeah, they weren't as consistent this year. Our whole team joked around that we were just going to hear Muscatel's name at awards over and over again but it didn't happen as often as we expected, and they didn't get as many firsts as we thought.

I'm going to make an entire prediction of nationals when all the teams are set. Maybe I'll be close.
I bet you had to read this twice

I will attempt one as well, although my predictions will likely be unreliable because I am quite the Science Olympiad neophyte.

Interestingly enough many unexpected things are happening. Alongside SAA taking the second Illinois spot, it appears Beckendorff took second to Riverwood in Texas this year.
Was this a fluke or does this mean Riverwood belongs in more rankings?

EDIT: Results are here - http://outreach.science.tamu.edu/tso/20 ... n_2014.pdf

It's very difficult to say. Certainly don't assume it for sure, Texas has trial events that can replace normal events. I feel like from the looks of it Beckendorff didn't take advantage, while Riverwood did. In the past, Beckendorff has always beaten Riverwood even when they got beaten by Riverwood. Admittedly it was a point difference, which makes this distinguishable from the past. I think still, the trial events thing may mean Beckendorff will probably do better, and Riverwood may just do better than usual (even that much I'm unsure about).

Honestly, I wouldn't look much into it considering that Riverwood dropped 4 actual events while Backendorff didn't drop any actual events.

How to medal points work with the dropped events? Shouldn't zeros be 40ths or 41sts?

No because they aren't factored into the score, it's as if that team just didn't compete, so medaling and everything is the same.

Dropped events are put in as zeros, since they don't affect the teams' scores (and are different than no-shows). Also, a team can't medal in an event that it drops (since the team didn't participate in the event). Essentially, dropped events are ignored for all scoring purposes.
