From the National FAQ:

"2.c. May students use symbols that refer to the term, i.e. a triangle (delta) for change, or a plus sign to symbolize a positive charge?"

Ha, we got away with that at our conference tournament, I drew a circle with a plus sign for proton. Good to know for regionals though.

Thanks! It's nice to know when you are practicing whether you are doing it right at all...
Though the rules against symbols are one more thing to make it harder.. How do you get any of them right??? :) I cannot imagine getting more than a couple...
Another thing I had trouble understanding... If you pass on a word, does the person who passed go next, or does it go on to the next drawer?
Smile :D

thats exactly what it is.

if the drawer passes, the drawer stays and draws again.
if the other members pass, switch drawers
that's how i think it works.
the judges at our regionals were very confused about it though.

You might want to make a list of science terms, then practice drawing them with your partner. And then practice again, and again, and again. (Flashcards help.) It's not a hard event, but practice is everything. :)

To make this simple:
1. You have to have a definite order in which your team draws (Doesn't apply obviously if you only have two people)
2. If you are drawing and your teamate(s) are not getting the word you can pass. Only the person drawing can actually pass. It is allowed for the person guessing to say pass if they want the drawer to pass but the drawer must then actually say pass.
3. Once the word is passed you may not come back to it.
4. When you pass a word the next person in the rotation then draws. It does not stay at the same person.
5. You are not allowed to speak or gesture unless you are saying pass. Although most supervisors don't care if your teammate is on the right track and you nod or gesture for them to keep going on that thought.
6. You cannot use symbols of any kind. The only use of symbols allowed is + and -, these may only be used to shorten or lengthen a word.

I think that is about it. It is a really fun event and I hope this helps anyone who is confused about the event.
