Personally, I didn't get the point of only allowing students to use keys from a keyboard. Anyways, i'm the do-er. What did u guys place this year?

We got 3rd... even though my builder is convinced she screwed up one step. You know the cross on top of the box thing? The x shape? Well she apparently thinks she switched the legs and put them in the wrong place. But hey. Best finish I've had at nats in WIDI.

Spontaneous and creative isn't always best. They once gave toothpicks and styrofoam, which sucked. (though i guess thats not terribly creative)

That would be a good challenge, I think everyone (except the people on my team this past year  until i told them..) used coordinate system for lego parts. that makes it a lot easier.. but if there were non-lego parts you would have to think a little more.
What do you mean by coordinate system?

I didn't get the point of only allowing students to use keys from a keyboard.
Symbols, drawings and diagrams are not allowed, with the exception of common punctuation and editing symbols.
The point is to define what "common punctuation and editing symbols" are allowed.

Yep, the lego pieces have bumps on them where you connect other pieces, so imagine those bumps as dots on a grid. You could say, put the 2x2x2 cube on the 5x5 plate at 2,3

You know, you could make a drawing for your directions that would go something like this:
--------------
----____ -----
--/-------\-----
-| 2 red---\------
-|----------|-------
-|--1 blue-|--------
-|_______|------------
-----------------------------
Say, the colors mean tooth picks... :P

(ignore dotted lines, they're there for format)
