I wasn't in the trial, but I'm assuming that they'll give you directions for all of the tests (for safety reasons). You'll have to be able to interpret the result, though. There will probably be some chemicals, some beakers, some test tubes, some electrical probes, etc.

Basically, if some farmer came up to you, handed you a bag of sample soil, a soil-testing kit from Home Depot, and gloves, and said, "I'm trying to grow string beans. What kind of fertilizer should I put on my soil?" you should be able to answer their question in 50 minutes or less. At least, that's how I think of it.

Enviro Chem

Post by NachoDynamite » January 29th, 2009, 7:11 pm

I was at an invitational and the envirochem test was weird....it had pictures of wilting plants and asked what they were deficient in.... does anybody have any good links or something that could help if anybody ever comes across these types of questions again? :?

Well, somehow I doubt a farmer will ask me to do that; they know how to do it themselves around here. But, I do need to know how for this event.

Our locals test (I just took it) used - you guessed it - a soil testing kit from... Well, Ace Hardware, not the Home Depot, but I'll bet you anything it's the exact same thing you would get at the Home Depot. Stopping my rambling about stores... It was pretty much two stations: one where we tested soil, analyzed the results, and recommended a remedy, and the other was written stuff. There were only 4 of us, though, so it's prob'ly gonna be different, 'cause the smaller the group taking a test, the easier our coaches tend to make it.

Now cross my fingers and hope to get on the Team!

Oh, and a word of advice, know the soil preferences of crops commonly grown in your state or reigon; i.e., they grow a lot of sunflowers here in South Dakota, and that was on the test, as well as soy beans. Those may not be common in other places, but say, if you live in Florida, try to put Oranges or something on your notesheet. Just in case.

You can bring notes, but they have to be handwritten and must fit on one 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper. Some good resources-

soinc.org
your state's SO page
and anything else you can come up with.

RUN LOTS OF PRACTICE TESTS!!!

Environmental Chem...

In regards to Environmental Chemistry, does anybody know where I can get some really good practice tests (like state level or higher)? I won this event but want to beat Kelly Lane...

So what have people's invitational and regional tests for this event been like? At my invitational, this event was canceled, which sucks because it's the main event that I needed a practice in...
