Re: Fossils B/C
That's a toughie.
I think Septastraea's septa (in the calices) are a little more distinct.
Also, Hexagonaria specimens are sometimes polished.

I know, it doesn't show much.....I still might not be doing Fossils..... I have possible event conflicts

I checked my state's schedule and for a moment, I thought two of my most important events were conflicting.

Re: Fossils B/C
So I know this has probably been asked before multiple times, but do you guys think a page for each taxon is a good idea?
Like for each genus and such?

I didn't choose the Bug Lyfe, the Bug Lyfe chose me.

Re: Fossils B/C
Yes, definitely.
In the competition, you can just ID a specimen by it's taxa, then flip to the taxa paper to answer the more in-depth questions about the fossil.

Re: Fossils B/C
Question on the taxonomic ranks and such:
Will we be required to identify any species? According to the rule book, it says "Questions will be chosen from the following topics: ... Species," but the list for the event only has one species listed: "neanderthalensis. So, aside from that, the most specific taxon we'll be asked to identify are genus, correct?

Re: Fossils B/C
I think so. I'm new to this event, but if we have to know the species too, then this event is way too hard, even for you Div. C peeps.

Re: Fossils B/C
Yup. If it were species, I wouldn't be on this event.
Does anybody have some tips on what to add besides papers for each taxa
Thanks.

Re: Fossils B/C
I'm looking at the C rules right now(I'm not sure if they're different from B, so B members, look at your own rules first), but it seems you'll need to know about Index Fossils, Absolute dating, preservation, etc. So I think having pages on each of those, probably in the front or back of your binder to be easily located, would be quite helpful. I was planning on having half a page to a page on different half-lives of isotopes(I'm probably just going to take Table N from the NY State Chemistry Reference Table). If you have the room in your binder, having too much information isn't a bad thing.
