Science Olympiad Classes

Postby gh » February 11th, 2009, 6:11 pm

Just wondering, who here has Science Olympiad classes in school?

The idea got floated around for my school when I was a freshman and sophomore, but it never happened because we're student-taught (no coaches, just faculty for paperwork and such) and everyone was really opposed to integrating it into the classroom.
  • If you have classes, what are your thoughts on it? What do you do with building events? How much student participation and leadership do you think is involved compared to a school without classes?
  • If you don't have classes, do you wish that you did? What sort of advantages/disadvantages would it have and how do you think it would affect your team?

I don't have classes. I don't think I would want it because it would just take up one hour in my class schedule. I prefer it as an extracurricular activity.

Don't have classes. Wish we did. It would be tough to fit in everyone's schedule (mine included), but it would help immensely to have the time available every day. The teams that consistently do well around here seem to have classes.

It's really a challenge to get some people to put the effort in after school. Plus it's hard to get everyone together at once. No doubt we'd be a much better team if we had it as a class.

But there's absolutely zero chance of it happening.

Well first of all, my high school doesnt even have science olympiad so we wouldnt have a science olympiad class. If we did though, i dont think i would take it. We ONLY have 6 blocks to schedule classes in so you can take the 5 major subjects plus an elective, additional honors, or AP class. If we had more blocks like say 7 or 8 then i would definitely take it.

We don't have classes, but I do believe that FM does.

I don't know of any school that has classes, but people often ask if our's does (we don't, obviously). Classes would be so stupid, as taking AP Biology probably helps in bio events more than a class covering all 23 events, no? Also, taking a class might help in the short run, but the people who win State and Nationals are the people who understand the material so well they don't need coaching or classes.

I was in a class last year for SO and let me say, it help SO MUCH! Yes, you do need to understand the material, but for other events, such as WIDI or Science Word getting together is key. I don't know about everyone else, but all my partners do at least 3 extra curricular activities besides SO. This lead to practice times such as "every second Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 unless it conflicts with honor orchestra because if you miss a rehearsal you were cut". The class gave me time just to work on my events with my partners and not have to worry about my schedule or anyone else's. It was like a little island of SO we had everyday, where we could just go away and work on SO.
SO stressed!

A lot of schools have Research classes, and some do S.O. in research. We don't, but we might someday ...
