Both my parents (well before they met each other) were at the International Chemistry Olympiad in I think Bucharest in '80-something. I've never really asked them about the language issues involved, or how they qualified, but maybe now I will :-) .

Note that the people on these teams may live in the U.S., but the participant's true ethnicities may be Asian or Western European/Russian. Here is one of the examples: US Physics Olympiad team 2008 - Tucker Chan, Edward Gan, Joshua Oreman, Danny Zhu, and Rui Hu. Only one non-asian, just saying :|
2010 States: 1st Astronomy, 1st Remote Sensing
2010 Nationals: 3rd Astronomy, 5th Remote Sensing
2011 States: 1st Astronomy, 2nd Wind Power, 5th Fossils
2011 Nationals: 1st Astronomy, 6th Wind Power
2012 States: 1st Astronomy, 1st Remote Sensing, 3rd Chemistry Lab

4 life-changing years.
