Cause: The amount of Pfiesteria piscicida increased, causing a higher, more dangerous amount of toxin to be released, causing the symptoms.
Source: Excess nutrients from animal waste and fertilizers caused Pfiesteria piscicida to multiply.
Spread: The outbreak was limited to waterways with high populations of Pfiesteria piscicida, such as the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay and North Carolina.

What is the difference between causal, noncausal, and spurious associations?

changes in exposure produce changes in outcome
changes in exposure do not necessarily produce changes in outcome
false association, results from sampling error/bias
I found these on the web, but I learned a lot in the process. Thanks, dragons790!

Horizontal transmission occurs from one individual to another in the same age group/generation.
Vertical transmission occurs when a disease causing agent is passed from a parent to offspring.
Iatrogenic transmission is a result of medical procedures (e.g. injection of material into one's body).
For more information on transmission, see this Wikipedia article.

Even in situations of similar exposure, many humans' health can be affected very differently as a result of individual physical characteristics and/or behaviors. For example, one such characteristic is body weight. List five exposure factors.
