At least in this case, that's a formality since team and ES check-in are (well, start on) on Friday, and it's common for teams to do device testing in the armory (very high ceiling) on Friday when permitted to do so. The tournament, itself, only occurred on Saturday.

NY also does their state competition over two days. The registration and impound on Friday night allows for the building supervisors time to inspect, if so used by the event supervisors. At least three events are also held on Friday night, with Experimental Design as one of them. It allows more time for grading the longer events. Otherwise, the award ceremony won't start much before 9pm on Saturday with the number of teams in both competitions!

Speaking of which, how did that come about? Did your team demand a recount or something? At first they said fossil won...

I'm a bit fuzzy about what happened... :?
research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.

Yes, the tournament ended with Fossil Ridge in first place.

A few schools requested some of the events scores/tests to be looked into. That lead to the uncovering of some unintended errors, and some places shuffled.

It happens, though! Last season was weird in IL because second place secured a National bid on a tiebreaker.
