The purpose behind bringing a microphone is to record original audio. The sound library probably wouldn't bring in full points for that section, then.

Competed in the Case Regionals competition against some very strong teams yesterday (Solon, Mentor, etc.) and came out on top in Game on, 1st place. They were kind enough to give us back our game, so I hosted it on Scratch so it could help out others looking for examples.

No modifications have been made since the end of the competition. Something to keep in mind are that EVERYONE has to deal with the limited time constraints. Don't expect 1st place to be the next Undertale.

Great game! It works really smoothly. Just curious, did you come up with this game on the spot or have you been practicing it? I would think the latter but ig you never know. Also, what was the theme given?

What have you guys been doing to prepare for this event? I've done it two ways: 1. make 2 or 3 "template" games and try to adapt given themes to one of these ideas, 2. just practice a bunch with random themes and try to make different games each time.
With the first way sometimes I have to stretch the theme a ton to make it fit into the template, or it just ends up not very creative. The second way has a fair bit of uncertainty...

I've tried both once or twice. At Yale I made one from scratch (pun intended) but I forgot to follow the rubric so my bad finish is really due to other factors. At regionals I tried making a game on the spot and medalled (10th), but at states when my friend and I adapted Flappy Bird to the Gravity theme we got 37th...so at least make the template game original?

lol "game on the spot"

i don't think my templates are very original, one of them is just a chasing game :P
might have to do some serious brainstorming now, which tbh I haven't done well this entire season

What themes have you guys encountered/practiced with? Our theme at regionals was flying.

I agree with everyone about the rubric. Much of it is highly subjective and the objective part is unfairly weighted. We placed first at our regional. Or game was a flying bird that had to dodge airplanes, helicopters, and space ships. The flying objects got progressively bigger and faster as the game went on. We came up with a few templates that we've been adapting to other themes. Any theme suggestions are appreciated!

For tryouts, the theme was winter.
At MIT the theme was mechanical springs
Yale's theme was dinosaurs
Our state's theme was finding things... yeah that one wasn't the greatest

Our Invitational theme was Magnetism, but they didn't run it at Regionals.

EDIT: This is the link to our game. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/98614742/ . Because it was Invitationals, they ran the event on the online version of Scratch and allowed us to save our games onto our own accounts for future reference. Our game was a very crude replication of Pong with a little tweaking to fit the magnetism theme that nonetheless won 2nd place at the Ionia Invitational.
