Think Different 15: Rulers and Revolutionaries

Post by kleinerPanzer »

Title is pretty self-explanatory. Decided now was as good a time as ever to get a new Think Different started

Rules, copied from TD 14:

1. You have 10 questions that you try to guess a correct answer for.
2. The catch is that the goal is to get the fewest number of points. The way you earn points is for each correct answer you give, you will earn the number of points equal to the number of people who guessed that answer. So, for instance, if your answer to Question 1 is Thomas Jefferson and 3 other people guessed that answer, you would earn 4 points for that question (1 for yours and 3 for the others). If you get the answer wrong, you earn the number of points equal to the number of participants plus 5 points (i.e. if there are 13 participants, you get 18 points). The best attainable score is 10 points.
3. There are two bonuses you could use to replace an answer: DROP and SHEEP. DROP means you earn 1 point for that question. SHEEP means you earn the number of points equal to the answer that the most people answered. So for instance, if the correct answers were A, B, C, and D, and 7 people guessed A, 6 people guessed B, 3 people guessed C, and 2 people guessed D, then the people who said SHEEP would earn 7 points for the answer (your SHEEP doesn't count as an answer and doesn't affect the others' scores). You get only 1 of each bonus if you so choose to use them. It is advised that you use DROP before SHEEP. Again, you don't have to use either of these bonuses.
4. Please send your responses to me via private messaging on the Forums or through Discord DMs before 31 January, 2021 at 13:00 EST (12:00 noon CST). Any answers sent after that point will not be considered.
5. Make sure not to cheat, please. Cheating is defined as letting other users know what your answers are before the deadline is reached. For this game, you may use any sources to find your answers (i.e. the wiki, Google, etc.).
6. Users can change their answers before the due date arrives, but after the due date, answers may not be changed.

Clarification on Question 3: "nation" in this context means a sovereign state under its own rule. Colonial possessions and occupation zones do not count as countries, but countries under spheres of influence do.

Additional Clarification on Question 3: "existed prior to the year 1950" and "as of the year 2000" means the regime change or cessation of existence of the country happened sometime between those two years and that the country existed both prior to, during, and for at least some time after 1 January 1950 in its immediate pre-collapse form. For example, an empire that existed in the year 400 but collapsed in 1300 would not be a valid candidate as an answer. However, a country which existed in 1949 and collapsed in 1951 would count.

Sorry for the delay, but here's the results! All one long post because I can't be bothered to make a bunch of separate ones.

Incorrect answers have been marked in red, while answers not used are listed below each "table" of answers.

1. Name a crowned monarch of the Romanov dynasty.

malikaow1004 — Pavel I Petrovich (Paul)
MorningCoffee — Mikhail I Feodorovich (Michael)
TailsFan101 — Pavel I Petrovich (Paul)
jaspattack — Pyotr II Alekseyevich (Peter II)
caitlinwithaC — Ivan VI Antonovich (Ivan VI)
sneepity — Konstantin Pavlovich (Constantine) - While he briefly ascended the throne, he was not coronated and therefore not crowned.
sciolyperson1 — Pavel I Petrovich (Paul)
hippo9 — Pyotr II Alekseyevich (Peter II)

Aleksei I Mikhailovich (Alexis)
Feodor III Alekseyevich (Feodor III)
Ivan V Alekseyevich (Ivan V)
Pyotr I Alekseyevich (Peter I, the Great)
Ekaterina I Mikhailova (Catherine I)
Anna I Ioannovna (Anna)
Yelizaveta I Petrovna (Elizabeth)
Pyotr III Feodorovich (Peter III)
Yekaterina II Alekseyevna (Catherine II, the Great)
Aleksandr I Pavlovich (Alexander I)
Nikolai I Pavlovich (Nicholas I)
Aleksandr II Nikolaevich (Alexander II)
Aleksandr III Aleksandrovich (Alexander III)
Nikolai II Aleksandrovich (Nicholas II)

2. Name a nation in the UN.

malikaow1004 — Cambodia
MorningCoffee — Moldova
TailsFan101 — Bahrain
jaspattack — Benin
caitlinwithaC — Djibouti
sneepity — Cameroon
sciolyperson1 — Chile
hippo9 — Lesotho

https://www.un.org/en/member-states/

3. Name a country that existed prior to the year 1950 but changed regimes or ceased to exist as of the year 2000.

malikaow1004 — SHEEP
MorningCoffee — Syrian Republic
TailsFan101 — Free Territory of Trieste
jaspattack — Mongolian People's Republic
caitlinwithaC Mongolian People's Republic
sneepity — Czechoslovak People's Republic
sciolyperson1 — Ashanti Empire
hippo9 — Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen

Afghanistan
Albania
All-Palestine Government
Brazil
Bulgaria
Chile
Colombia
Cuba
Dominican Republic
East Germany
Egypt
El Salvador
Estonia
Ethiopia
France
Greece
Haiti
Hungary
Indonesia
Iran
Iraq
Jordan
Kalat
Latvia
Lithuania
Myanmar
Nicaragua
North Vietnam
Poland
Portugal
Republic of Korea
Romania
Saudi Arabia
South Africa
South Vietnam
Soviet Union
Spain
The Philippines
Tibet
Venezuela
Vietnam
West Germany
Yugoslavia

4. Name a past winner of the "Future Dictator" superlative.

malikaow1004 — DROP
MorningCoffee — DROP
TailsFan101 — RandomPerson
jaspattack — DROP
caitlinwithaC — Robotman
sneepity — DROP
sciolyperson1 — DROP
hippo9 — DROP

DarkSabre
Eaststroudsburg13

5. Name any word from the original Italian lyrics to the song "Bella Ciao."

malikaow1004 — seppellire - this is from the Partisan version, not the original Mondine version
MorningCoffee — verrà
TailsFan101 — che
jaspattack — tutte
caitlinwithaC — insetti
sneepity — genti - this is from the Partisan version, not the original Mondine version
sciolyperson1 — qui
hippo9 — io

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bella_cia ... ne_version

6. Name one of the regimes (not individual rulers) which ruled France since 1792. This does not include occupying outsiders.

malikaow1004 — French State (Vichy France)
MorningCoffee — First Republic
TailsFan101 — First Empire
jaspattack — Fourth Republic
caitlinwithaC — July Monarchy
sneepity — Bourbon Restoration
sciolyperson1 — Ancien Régime - The Old Regime (i.e. the old monarchy) had lost control over France by 1789, most certainly by 1792.
hippo9 — Second Empire

Second Republic
Third Republic
Fifth Republic

7. Name an empire which primarily ruled in Africa and existed at some point between the years 0 and 1500.

malikaow1004 — Jolof Empire
MorningCoffee — SHEEP
TailsFan101 — Fatimid Caliphate
jaspattack — Mali Empire
caitlinwithaC — Kingdom of Tlemcen
sneepity — Carthage - While certainly within Africa, the Carthaginian Empire had fallen by 146 BC at the hands of the Roman Republic.
sciolyperson1 — Kingdom of Buganda
hippo9 — Oyo Empire

I was extremely lenient on grading what counted as an "Empire." My original intent was only for nations which explicitly used "Empire" in their English name, as this would be around 12 answers, but I ended up deciding against it.

Aksumite
Ethiopian
Ghana
Benin
Wolof
Bornu
Songhai
Great Fulo
Kanem-Bornu
And of course, anything else that was not formally known as an "empire" but was a sovereign, self-governing monarchy.

8. Name one of the Revolutions of 1848.

malikaow1004 — French
MorningCoffee — Spring of Nations - This is an alternative term for the 1848 Revolutions, not a specific example.
TailsFan101 — Hungarian
jaspattack — Irish
caitlinwithaC — Polish
sneepity — SHEEP
sciolyperson1 — Hungarian
hippo9 — Irish

German
Ottoman
Danish
Italian
Austrian
Sicilian
Chartist Movement
Belgian
Dutch
The qualifications for what counted as one of the 1848 Revolutions was very spotty; if someone had answered with "Swedish," I likely would have given the point since a lot of these are loosely defined.

9. Name a revolutionary period which contains the word "Spring" in its English name.

malikaow1004 — Arab Spring
MorningCoffee — Spring of Nations (Revolutions of 1848)
TailsFan101 — DROP
jaspattack — Seoul Spring
caitlinwithaC — Kathmandu Spring (1990 Nepalese People's Movement)
sneepity — Ukrainian Spring (Euromaidan)
sciolyperson1 — Prague Spring
hippo9 — Cedar Spring (Cedar Revolution)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_(p ... rminology)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Revolutions

10. Name a synonym of "revolution" ("drastic action or change, often in politics") according to Thesaurus.com.

malikaow1004 — mutiny
MorningCoffee — upheaval
TailsFan101 — shift
jaspattack — strike
caitlinwithaC — metamorphosis
sneepity — coup
sciolyperson1 — tumult
hippo9 — turmoil

https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/revolution?s=t

FINAL RESULTS
1. caitlinwithaC 11 - especially impressive considering no DROPs were used!
2. hippo9 12
T-3. TailsFan101 13
T-3. jaspattack 13
5. MorningCoffee 22 - particularly unlucky as only one incorrect answer barred them from a perfect score
6. sciolyperson1 25
7. malikaow1004 26
8. sneepity 48

Some final remarks:
I definitely should have reduced the amount of available answers per question by adding specificity. Some were obviously meant to be freebies, such as Question 2, but only 3 out of the 10 questions actually had any overlapping answers which created point differences, leading to very close standings among the top 4. I also think the question difficulty was probably more of an annoyance to some or even a barrier to play for others—ideally, incorrect answers are a rare occurrence and questions have an average of only 10-15 answers.

Anyway, thank you everyone for playing! Decide amongst yourselves who will be hosting next!
