Can someone explain how the old scoring system worked? I look at it and I'm just confused.

Total number of teams = N
Cutoff = C
1st place: C points
2nd place: C-1 points
...
Cth place - Nth place: 1 point

C varies a lot; in the old national tournaments, it was almost always less than the number of teams. For example, in the first several tournaments C = 11, then they switched to 21, then (I think; can't remember exactly) 35, 41, and 54 (at that point the number of teams at nationals), before switching to the modern method in 2001.
