No more Online Scrimmage

Postby Scubababa » September 1st, 2016, 12:04 am

According to https://www.soinc.org/invitationals, virtual/cyber/online events aren't allowed.
Looks like there might not be an online scrimmage this year. Super bummed :(
What do you guys think about this new rule?

It's not a new rule. It's been in place for many years and many people have tried to start virtual tournaments only to be shut down.

I think there is a discussion on this in the 2013 forums somewhere (or maybe it was this year, I can't remember).

Hasn't the Iolani scrimmage been running for several years now? Why is it that the national organization hasn't come after them anytime in the last 4+ years?

Iolani isn't an official sanctioned Science Olympiad tournament, from what I know.

from https://www.soinc.org/invitationals

Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament Requirements

While participation in Science Olympiad Invitational Tournaments is optional and in most cases requires a separate event fee collected by each Invitational Director, all school teams participating in a Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament must first be a registered member of the state and national Science Olympiad program, and each Invitational Director MUST sign and return a Tournament Directors form each year in order to hold an officially sanctioned Science Olympiad event. Request the password for this online form from your State Director, as they must approve your tournament.

NO Virtual/Online/Cyber Science Olympiad Events Allowed:

Virtual/Online/Cyber events cannot be classified as sanctioned Science Olympiad Tournaments, and teams may not offer them. In order to retain our Chapter/Club Liability Insurance, Science Olympiad Tournaments require the physical presence of all Science Olympiad members at a single location (site/campus/school). Do not send Invitational Tournament Director forms for Virtual/Online/Cyber events as they will be rejected. Teams may write their own original materials (not using Science Olympiad events as the basis, which is a Copyright violation) and share them with others as practice only. If you have questions, please contact your State Director.

Please see the Science Olympiad Copyright Statement outlining use of Science Olympiad Rules and procedures at sanctioned tournaments.

So can we do online tournaments that aren't official? Just for fun?
