Simply put, this amounts to building a device that is smaller in at least one dimension OR simply cutting a bit off of the corners.
Again, there is NO contradiction! It is just an engineering challenge.
Agreed. Except I wouldn't call it an engineering challenge per se. After all the device is allowed to be as small as possible and there is not much of an advantage in making it longer and wider.

Also, most if not all build events have multiple parameters that students have to deal with. Bridges, for example, must be shorter that 2 cm at the 35cm clear span mark, must sit on a 2x5x5 cm block on other side, and be loaded from the center, and hold a 2x5x5 loading block. Meeting one requirement for the design doesn't mean you don't have to consider the other requirements. BOTH the 80cm size box and 100cm square are requirements.

Additionally, you don't have to turn your 80cm box, you could design a part of the device that rotates so the 100cm square RULE isn't violated. That sounds like innovation to me.

And the metric system is the language of science.

"And the metric system is the language of science."

Certainly it's used in universities across the US too, despite the resistance of the general population to change.
